Green for Profit or Green for Environment

Reformation is a brand that is ethically and socially sustainable fashion for the environment. Their buildings are all green and LEED-friendly buildings. They keep track of the amounts of CO2 and water saved through production of their clothing.

Environmentally friendly brands need to start at the highest pollution causing step, the assembly line/office buildings. Reformation has taken a step back and identified the highest CO2 and water wasting part of their company and changed it. They’re giving proof of what they’re doing as public knowledge and letting people know the impact they’re making by shopping at their store.

No, they haven’t been in any scandals. I believe they’re green for environment rather than green for profit. They seem, as a company, to really care about what they’re doing and care about the affect their company has on the environment.

Top Dog Versus Underdog

The marketing strategy that is used by Visa is the ability of availability even in their slogan they make it known that they’re easy to use and accepted everywhere. This entices people to use Visa brand cards because they are comforted by the fact that it’s available everywhere. They also make it well known that they’re ahead of the curve in their technology.

The counterpart is MasterCard. MasterCard takes a slightly different approach in the way they focus more on the modern aspect and simplified usage. Making it known to consumers that MasterCard isn’t complicated and very simple to understand. They want to be apart of your everyday life even in their slogan they make it known.

The way MasterCard could improve upon their marketing strategy is to emphasize on something that makes them unique to Visa. Visa is constantly bombarding people with all of the features it can do which entices people. MasterCard is often seen as the quieter relative. Being louder and establishing who they are in comparison to Visa could help with their marketing. What makes them unique? This is a question they should be asking themselves.

I believe it mostly is loyalty and word of mouth. People are easily swayed if a loyal consumer tells you how much they’ve loved their Visa. I also think the technology is higher. They made more of their cards tap cards before MasterCard.

In the case study article, what market segments were identified and what segmentation strategies were implemented?

The demographic was one of the strongest marketing segmentations put into their plans. They heavily targeted women in order to further expand their profits and sales. This was due to the fact that most of their sales were from men. Culture and lifestyle were also taken into consideration as even in their ads they show people with a lot of movement and the Under Armor moving with people’s every movements.

What do you believe are four to five key points to remember when implementing segmentation strategies?

  1. Objectives: having a clear set objective is important when implementing segmentation strategies. In Under Armor’s case they saw the need for more women in their campaigns and went for it. In their company this was a goal that was achievable and in reach.
  2. Development: Putting the plan into forward motion is important as well. Just writing out the plan and hoping it will happen doesn’t work. Instead there has to be forward momentum in the company towards the goal.
  3. Understanding your consumers: If a company just says they want more women to buy their products it doesn’t mean it will come true. Rather there has to be extensive research done into the market trends behind women and why they buy.
  4. The launch plan: Most importantly there’s executing the launch plan.

Identify a new market segment that you have noticed recently (during your own shopping experience online, in a commercial ad, or in a secondary resource such as a magazine) that you believe would be a great market to explore. How might you create a segmentation strategy to reach this new market segment?

Animals owners! Recently in Barnes and Noble I noticed a lot of pet magazines such as Catster, Dogster, and other animal magazines. I had never noticed this before but they were really cool and targeted towards the owner of animals with tips, products, and ads all based around animals. Ways to create a strategy for this market would be through a lot of research as to what makes animal owners buy things for their animals.

Consumer who? Consumer you!

What type of consumer are you?

I would say I am an impulse consumer. I buy most of my stuff on impulse when shown a good deal or new stock. Even in my work, which is Nordstrom, I often buy things on impulse due to my discount. This is probably one of the worst consumers due to the fact they often return things later. I know I am guilty of returning things often.

What influences your buying decision and why?

The things that influence my buying decisions are sales, new stock, and seasonal changes. Every season I find myself buying new things in order to match the new season rather than finding my old stuff. Also, sales are never permanent so I feel the need to buy now and ask later.

Which stage actually leads to your purchasing decisions?

The stage of realizing that I need it and someone else may buy it. Also, realizing that I can later return it helps as well. Returns are something I do a lot and it’s easier than trying it on and thinking about the decision.

When making a buying decision, how are you influenced by marketing research and marketing design?

Flashy and eye grabbing ads turn me off, I prefer well thought out marketing ploys and things that look more pastel.

Do you experience any post-purchase behavior?

I always feel this and often end up returning things due to regret. That’s why I am one of the worst consumers due to regret and return.

Marketing Objectives

Marketing objectives are long-term goals that companies make in order to achieve a competitive advantage. In order to do this correctly many people use the SMART approach to marketing objectives.

Specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time specific. By using this five step process it helps marketers to better narrow down to create a plan. If marketing objectives are not used in the correct way it can result in companies creating a plan that is just not viable and it could result in monetary loss or time loss within the company. By creating a marketing objective that is timely, achievable, and plausible it creates a set up that will help the company to better maximize their time.

When creating a market objective a company also has to consider what would best reflect their company. If they’re creating a goal that doesn’t align with the ethics of the company, it could end up portraying a bad image to their consumers and create a loss for the company. Considering the point of a marketing objective is to increase the companies revenue, this would be counterproductive.

Market Segmentation

One of the most important steps for a marketer is to define and understand their target market. One of the key tools that help marketers with this would be gathering data about products similar to yours and what demographic is interested in said product. Narrowing down on the demographics will help with get a better understanding, so what is another way to do this you ask?

Social Media Analytics

Especially with accounts that are listed as business accounts there’s the ability to see which posts due better and which demographic it does better with. This would help with understanding how the initial sneak peak does with the community and what community it does better with. There’s also the ability to look at the analytics of other business accounts which could help to see similar things.

Surveys

Surveys are a really good way to determine the interests people have in a new product/service. Also, to start the survey you can ask what age group they fit in for example: 18 and younger, 18-26, 26-36, 36-46, 40 n up. This could give a huge understanding of what age range is interested and what their opinions are in your products.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
